Xiaomi : tab

China’s Xiaomi has announced its first tablet, expanding a device portfolio that has been focused on selling lots of smartphones running its MIUI Android firmware. The announcement confirms earlier rumours that a Xiaomi slate was incoming.

Prior to today, Xiaomi was also selling its own wi-fi routers and set-top boxes — as well as offloading plush toy merchandise to its army of teenage fans — but the addition of a tablet to its portfolio fills an obvious gap for consumers.

It is also potentially a big opportunity for Xiaomi, with the Android tablet space still not dominated by any one device in the way that Apple’s iPad has dominated the category.

Indeed, that’s something that company founder, Lei Jun, who has been dubbed the ‘Steve Jobs of China’, played up in comments made today at the Beijing launch event for the new Mi tablet — where he reportedlysaid: “We hope to put pressure on Apple.”

Specs wise, the tablet is an iPad mini-esque 7.9 inches. But more like the iPhone 5c, it comes in a range of colours — six in all, including blue, pink, yellow and green. The URL for the tablet’s webpage on Xiaomi’s site even names it the ‘mi pad’: http://www.mi.com/mipad:

Xiaomi Mi Pad

Screen resolution is 2048 x 1536, and there’s a 2.2GHz Tegra K1 processor powering the slate, along with 2GB of RAM.

The wi-fi only Mi is priced at 1,499 yuan ($240) for the 16GB version, or 1,699 yuan ($270) for the 64GB version.

The company is doing a beta launch of the tablet initially — something it’s done with prior hardware releases — offering it to a limited group of users next month, ahead of a full product launch at a later, as yet unconfirmed date.

Xiaomi shipped 11 million smartphones in Q1 this year, and has a target of 60 million by year’s end — fueled by its first major international expansion steps. Expanding its portfolio to include a flagship tablet, alongside its smartphones, is the next natural step.

It’s previously said it’s planning to launch products into Malaysia, Indonesia, India, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Russia, Turkey, Brazil, and Mexico this year, in addition to its existing market footprint of China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore.

Foldable smartphone transforms into tablet, laptop

Scientists have developed the world’s first foldable smartphone that changes to a tablet and a notebook using a set of screens and hinges.

The shape changing smartphone allows users to fold open up to three flexible electrophoretic displays to provide extra screen real estate, the amount of space available on a display, when needed. Displays are detachable such that users can fold the device into various shapes that can range from an ultra notebook shape to a foldout map.

“In PaperFold, each display tile can act independently or as part of a single system,” said Dr Vertegaal, a professor in the School of Computing and director of the Human Media Lab at Queen’s University, Canada.

Updated: Best Windows Phone - which should you buy?Best Windows Phones - which should you buy? When Windows Phone 8 launched in 2012 it was looking to shake up the mobile market and differentiate itself from the dominant Android and iOS. While Windows Phone 8 has increased Microsoft's presence in the mobile market, its popularity has dipped in the past year. There's still hope yet though as Microsoft continues to persevere. The recently launched Windows Phone 8.1 replicates the popular features of Android and iOS whilst combining the comfort of home computing with the convenience of mobile. We've looked at the Windows Phone devices on offer and picked out the best ones around to guarantee you get the best bang for your buck. Nokia still dominates the list but as a Microsoft entity, that's no surprise. 1. Nokia Lumia 520Nokia Lumia 520Price: from £84.99Dimensions: 6.4 x 1.0 x 12.0 cm ; 124 gInternal Storage: 8GBIt may not be the most expensive, most glamorous or most powerful smartphone but the Nokia Lumia 520 still stands firm at the top of our list. We are yet to find a more perfect introduction to smartphone and Windows Phone 8 use. Considering its low price point, the Lumia 520 still boasts impressive specs with a 4-inch display, 1GHz dual-core processor and even a micro SD card slot if you want to expand your storage. While it may not have all the fancy add-ons you expect from the top end phones, the Lumia 520 is still the most functional and fun Windows Phone on the market. It's certainly a winner in our book.Read our Nokia Lumia 520 review2. Nokia Lumia 1520Noka Lumia 1520Price: from £370Dimensions: 8.5 x 0.9 x 16.3 cm ; 209 gInternal Storage: 32GIf big is what you're looking for then look no further than the Nokia Lumia 1520 with its 6-inch display. However, it's not just the screen that's big, this mobile beast is brimming with powerful specs crowning it our best Windows Phone Phablet. The Lumia 1520 is the first Windows Phone 8 device with a Full HD 1080p display. It's also the first to run on a quad-core processor, making it the ideal gadget for mobile media lovers. You'd think all these features would result in an unattractive phone, but it's surprisingly sleek, even the impressive 20MP PureView camera barely bulks it out. Who says size doesn't matter? It certainly does with this bad boy.Read our Nokia Lumia 1520 review3. Nokia Lumia 925Nokia Lumia 925Price: from £290Dimensions: 7.1 x 0.8 x 12.9 cm ; 141 gInternal Storage: 16GBSleek, stylish and Nokia's only metallic Windows Phone, the Nokia Lumia 925 is the flagship 'standard' smartphone. An update on the previous Nokia Lumia 920, the 925 offers a more premium finish. Although it is not entirely metal, it is however the slimmest of Nokia's designs. Aside from the look, there aren't many differences between the 920 and the 925. It still houses one of the best smartphone cameras we've seen with its 8.7MP PureView lens. Just imagine the 920 but all grown up.Read our Nokia Lumia 925 review4. Nokia Lumia 1020Nokia Lumia 1020Price: from £369Dimensions: 7.1 x 1.0 x 13 cm ; 159 gInternal Storage: 32GBWith the highest spec camera out of all the devices in the Lumia range, you'd be forgiven for thinking the Nokia Lumia 1020 should be placed slightly higher on our top 10 list. The Lumia 1020 has an impressive 41MP PureView camera with Xenon flash which means it does take superb shots. Nonetheless, the rest of the phone's features don't live up to scratch in comparison. The screen and processor are no bigger than the 820 or 925 and therefore it's just not powerful enough. However, it's dropped a lot in price recently, and that, combined with the stunning photography ability, makes it really worth a look. It's great for keen photographers but the camera is definitely the sole focus here. Best make sure you're on a good data plan if you want to share all your images.Read our Nokia Lumia 1020 review5. Nokia Lumia 820Nokia Lumia 820Price: from £285Dimensions: 6.9 x 1.0 x 12.4 cm ; 159 gInternal Storage: 8GBThe Nokia Lumia 820 has also overtaken the 920 as a much more affordable alternative. The Lumia 820 is the first phone in the Lumia range with an interchangeable case, taking us back to the days of old Nokia devices. Now you can decorate your device to match your mood, occasion or even outfit. This does make it chunkier than the likes of the 720, however its dual-core Krait Qualcomm processor and OLED ClearBlack display keep it firmly in front.Read our Nokia Lumia 820 review6-10 - the best Windows Phones.6. Nokia Lumia 720Nokia Lumia 720Price: from £169.99Dimensions: 0.9 x 6.8 x 12.8 cm ; 127 gInternal Storage: 8GBThe Nokia Lumia 720 sits smack bang in the middle of the Nokia Lumia range and as a result it does exactly what it says on the tin. Not exactly a showstopper, the Lumia 720 isn't bad for a mid-range phone. Its design remains more high-end than budget and it is actually slimmer and more lightweight than the Nokia Lumia 920. As you'd expect, the camera isn't as high spec, however neither is the cost and you still get a 6.7MP rear-facing camera and HD video on the front-facing camera. The phone also houses a 4.3-inch display and a dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 chipset, all in all, not too shabby for those on a budget.Read our Nokia Lumia 720 review7. HTC Windows Phone 8XHTC Win Phone 8XPrice: from £207Dimensions: 6.6 x 1.0 x 13.2 cm ; 91 gInternal Storage: 16GBFinally we reach the first non-Nokia phone in the top 10 and ironically the HTC Windows Phone 8X was Microsoft's signature device to launch its new operating system. Whilst still brightly coloured in its design, the HTC 8X is much sleeker and some say the best looking Windows Phone on the market. As with many HTC devices, the 8X boasts Beats Audio technology for superior sound quality. Its screen is also impressive at 342 ppi, beating the iPhone 5's retina display and coming close to the Google Nexus 7. Nonetheless, the 8X features lower on our list as it's not 4G enabled, unlike all the others above (with the exception of the Lumia 520 of course).Read our HTC Windows Phone 8X review8. Nokia Lumia 625Nokia Lumia 625Price: from £172.99Dimensions: 7.2 x 0.9 x 13.3 cm ; 159 gInternal Storage: 8GBA relatively new addition to the low-end budget range, the Nokia Lumia 625 outdoes the winning Lumia 520 in just two respects; it is 4G enabled and with a 4.7-inch screen it is much larger. It also runs a faster processor than the Lumia 720.Nonetheless it dwindles towards the end of our list as it doesn't provide the same all-round quality as its higher ranking alternatives. It simply doesn't have the same imaging credentials as its bigger brothers with just 201ppi.But if you want to take advantage of superfast 4G networks then it's an affordable option and definitely worth a look.Read our Nokia Lumia 625 review9. Nokia Lumia 920Nokia lumia 920Price: from £220Dimensions: 1.1 x 7.1 x 13 cm ; 186 gInternal Storage: 32GBIt may have been 'replaced' but as a previous flagship phone, the Nokia Lumia 920 still has a lot to offer and now comes at a cut-down cost.Although slightly less powerful than the 925, its 8MP rear camera still rivals the latest offerings from Samsung and Apple and for a much more attractive price. It's a great buy for those looking for a top-end cameraphone that has mastered all the basic functions to a good standard. Also, with its large 4.5-inch display and PureMotion HD technology it is a reasonably priced alternative to the mammoth Lumia 1520.It's not widely available these days, thanks to the popularity of the 925, but can still be picked up by shopping around.Read our Nokia Lumia 920 review10. HTC Windows Phone 8SHTC 8SPrice: from £132.99Dimensions: 6.3 x 1 x 12 cm ; 113 gInternal Storage: 4GB (can be expanded with a microSD card)The HTC Windows Phone 8S is a smaller, more affordable version of the 8X. It still retains the stylish and colourful design and is surprisingly fast for a mid-range phone. The HTC 8S offers the same screen size as the Lumia 520 and a Qualcomm S4 dual-core chip, although it comes with a slightly lower speed of 1GHz. It also stands out from most of the phones above, with the exception of the Nokia Lumia 520, as it has a microSD card for expandable storage. The specs on the HTC 8S read similarly to some of Nokia's mid-range options above and some say its design is more attractive. However, HTC have neglected some of the basics. The battery is average, web browsing can be slow and comparatively, it's a little over-priced at the budget end of the Windows Phone range - but it looks pretty nifty, right?.Read our HTC 8S review

  • 5 reasons why Google can catch Amazon in the cloud

    Other Technology news
Amazon Web Services (AWS) commands more than 80% of the cloud computing market. Google, a relatively new player in the segment, is far lagging behind. The internet search giant, however, could catch up with Amazon in future. Even it has the potential to be on top of the market.Below are the five reasons why Google can catch up to AWS:1. The market is young and prone to change. The cloud market is still small but it will explode in the coming years. Enterprises and SMEs are still making themselves comfortable with cloud computing.2. Google has the name and deep pockets. Google is a name that enterprises well recognises, while at the time, Amazon is seen as a online book seller. New users may give Google a try, just because of the brand value. Google can win over businesses, if it puts effort and money in promoting cloud services.3. Google needs to attack pricing. Google executives have said cloud pricing should follow Moore's Law-like pattern - falling by a factor of two every year. Google seems to be pushing that strategy forward. The day after Google's pricing announcement, AWS followed with what was its 42nd price reduction since inception.4. Google may is making big capital investments. Google, to make sure it has enough capacity to meet client's needs, is making huge capital investments to build the same.5. Google's future strategy hinges on the cloud. The search giant has put cloud at the core of its future strategy. This is to ensure that the engineering company remains key Internet player in future. Picture courtesy- Flickr.com

  • Big Data will drive the next phase of innovation in mobile computing

    New Technologies
The world is awash in data.CIBC, a Canadian bank, predicts that information-generation growth will increase 50 times over the next decade. IDC, a market research firm, similarly forecasts a 44-fold increase in data volumes between 2009 and 2020. Mobile, social, wearables, and The Internet of Things are playing a large part in driving this explosion in data.Apple upended the electronics business six years ago with the release of the iPhone. The iPhone ushered in an era when design, both of software and hardware, became the paramount concept in the tech world.Could data be the paradigm that anchors the next revolution? Many think so.According to the report of BI Intelligence on Big Data and Mobile defines big data, examine mobile's connection to it, analyze its potential, practical applications, and pitfalls, look at how it's collected, and answer some of the most frequently asked questions about big data and mobile. Here's an overview of the relationship between big data and mobile:First, big data needs to be defined: Big data is most commonly defined as data sets that meet three attributes, known as the three "Vs": volume, variety, and velocity. But there is something more to it. "I like to say there's a fourth V: value," says Kipp Jones, vice president of product at Skyhook. In order for data to be meaningful at all, it needs to be captured and stored efficiently. Then someone has to manage the data, analyze it, and extract value from it. Data, big or not, doesn't add up to anything worthwhile if it doesn't have value to someone.Mobile is particularly well-suited to a big data lens: Mobile big data isn't only a function of smartphone penetration and consumer usage patterns. The data is also created by apps or other services working in the background. Technically speaking, its not that different from data created using the traditional Web. The difference is that consumers are just producing more of it as we shift our behavior to digital channels, leaving a trail of data documenting our movements and actions. Even when we are ostensibly not using our phones, we are still creating reams of data. This data can be used to optimize and personalize mobile experiences: Mobile big data can be used for a dizzying variety of purposes, but it is often used for the optimization and personalization of mobile services. App developers, for example, might use Flurry's analytics to improve their apps. Retention is a key metric for developers. Developers can compare their user retention numbers with all other apps and apps within their own categories, to gain insight into how they stack up, and what they might have to change to improve their numbers.Or to help drive an explosion in mobile advertising: Location data is an essential component of mobile big data - perhaps the primary data type that differentiates mobile from Web-based big data. Location data is expected to help transform the mobile advertising industry. The ability to deliver real-time hyper-local, targeted advertising represents a potentially momentous evolution of the ad market.

Real People With Mind-Blowing Mutant Superpowers

By: Karl Smallwood, Kier Harris

If the insane, explosive popularity if superhero movies is any indication, we are fascinated by people who are insanely better than us at any given thing. Probably because, in real life, we're all such a bunch of incompetent boobs that we've been enslaved by blue paint, flashing lights and crying French babies.

But it turns out, superpowers are real. And not just the secret ones that everyone has, or even the ones everyone thinks they have -- this Cracked Classic is about a group of people that, in a sane world, would already have multi-colored leather jumpsuits, delightfully mismatched personality traits and a skyscraper shaped like whatever they decide to call themselves.

We've all dreamed of having superpowers at some point (today), but the majority of us have to accept the sobering reality that preternatural abilities simply aren't possible. That is, except for some rare cases of real, actual people with bona fide powers that defy explanation (and in some cases practical application).

For instance ...

#1. Ma Xiangang Is Impervious to Electric Shock

Ma Xiangang is a man capable of something not many others are or would have a practical reason to be -- he can touch live wires filled with scrotum-popcorning electricity and feel no pain whatsoever.

As with most superpower discoveries, Xiangang found his by acting like a braying jackass. One day when his television quit working, he went to go monkey with the fuse box to try to get it to come back on, accidentally touching a live wire in the process. Normally this story would end with people standing around a pine box and telling their favorite Ma Xiangang stories, but instead of white hot electric death, Xiangang felt nothing at all. Rather than praise his good fortune and call an electrician, he decided to touch the wires again. You know, just to check.

CRI English.com

"I figured I'd either die or get superpowers. It was pretty much 50-50."

Even more amazing is that even when touching live wires with hundreds of volts coursing through them (enough to put a horse on its ass), he feels no pain at all. In fact, Xiangang claims it makes him feel energetic, which is almost certainly him just screwing with us. We're also pretty sure he's lying when he claims he can givediathermic massages (deep tissue massages done with an electromagnet) using only his hands.

Getty

"In a few seconds you'll feel either an incredible release of tensionor a fatal dose of electricity."

So What's Going on Here?

Everybody's reaction to electricity is a little different; it's influenced by everything from how thick you are, to how moist your skin is, to other changes in body chemistry. Xiangang appears to be an outlier on the high end of the scale. According to testing, he has a resistance seven to eight times greater than the average human being, which grants him the ability to handle live wires without safety equipment, though, again, it behooves us to ask why in the hell he'd want to.

And yes, there are supposedly more people out there with abilities similar to Xiangang's. If you watch the first minute or so of this video, you'll see Jose Ayala pass electricity through his body and use it to burn paper. Again, we question the purpose or application of such abilities, and we're curious how many times he's accidentally incinerated his mail because he was holding it when he turned on his porch light.

YouTube

If he falls asleep using his computer he might burn down the entire house.

#2. Dean Karnazes Can Run Forever

Dean Karnazes is an American long-distance runner capable of inhuman feats of endurance, such running 50 marathons in each of the 50 states ... in 50 consecutive days. Which he totally goddamned did. He's run a marathon on every continent twice over and run 350 miles nonstop over three sleepless nights.

Ultramarathonman

"That lake had better back the fuck up, because I ain't stopping."

Back in 2007, Dean attempted to run from New York City to San Francisco, but had to stop in St. Louis, ravaged by disappointment. That is to say, this man has such a level of endurance that running 1,000 miles is disappointing to him. Karnazes has such an impressive list of achievements that when Time magazine listed him as one of their 100 most influential people of 2007, stopping his cross-continental run short was pretty much the only negative thing they could come up with. Then Karnazes completed the very same run in 2010 in 75 days and shut Time right the hell up.

Ultramarathonman

Dean Karnazes, shutting Time magazine the hell up.

Somehow he's managed to stop running long enough to write three books. That, or he hangs a typewriter from his neck and smacks the keys with his chin midstride.

So What's Going on Here?

Everything about Karnazes' body makes him a finely tuned running machine. A medical study was performed on him after he completed his 50-state marathonapalooza. First, they measured his CPK number, which shows the amount of damage your muscles sustain from exercise. So for instance, a normal runner's CPK would be through the roof after a marathon -- around 2,400. Karnazes' was found to be at 447 ... after 25 consecutive marathons.

Ultramarathonman

"Anyone else feel like hitting the gym, maybe doing a little kayaking?"

The study found that his muscles not only damage much less with exercise than the normal person's, they actually get used to continuous exercise and stop being damaged altogether, sort of like if Wolverine were a perpetual motion machine.

The study also found that he has more blood in his circulatory system than the average person, which allows him to stay more hydrated for longer and may or may not indicate that he is a day-walking (day-running?) vampire. But finally (and most impressively), they concluded that as long as he can keep himself properly hydrated and fed, he could potentially run at a seven- to 10-minute-mile pace forever.

Giving Dean the rare ability to go full Gump.

#3. Stephen Wiltshire Has a Perfect Visual Memory

Stephen Wiltshire can look at a city once and draw it from memory. So can we, big deal. The thing is, Wiltshire's drawing will actually look like the city, with every single building in its exact place and perfectly sized in proportion to real life. Buildings, windows, arches, doorways -- almost every detail is precisely correct in size and placement. Once again, he does this from memory. We, on the other hand, searched the Internet Movie Database five times in one hour because we kept forgetting Ray Winstone's name.

Getty

Above: A guy who doesn't need to set aside a half hour per day to find his keys.

Wiltshire has been drawing his entire life. His first words were "paper" and "pen" (which really throws his folks' parenting skills into question, if you think about it), and he's been traveling the world for 25 years on a continuing quest to draw different cities and landmarks, like if Caine fromKung Fu and Bob Ross collided in a time tunnel.

For instance, Wiltshire took a brief helicopter ride around New York City and produced this drawing afterward, purely from memory:

Stephen Wiltshire

$5 to the first person who spots where he hid the dick.

And he doesn't just remember these landscapes long enough to do the drawing. He retainsthem, possibly forever.

So What's Going on Here?

Wiltshire is an autistic savant (yes, like Rain Man). Autism hinders certain parts of the brain from communicating with one another, which can lead to difficulties with learning and processing information. But, this lack of communication between parts of the brain actually helps give Wiltshire his ability. It'd be sort of like if you had some kind of defect in the muscles of your arm that allowed it to only perform a perfect kung fu chop to the neck. It'd suck for everyday tasks like eating or working, but over the course of your life you'd get so good at kung fu neck chops that you could behead a man.

Getty

"One time, I sketched a skyscraper in half."

So take Wiltshire's helicopter ride -- most of us would be distracted by things like the noise of the chopper, or by thoughts such as "Why are these buildings spaced like that?" or "Is that a body in the East River?" But Wiltshire's kung-fu-chop brain can focus like a microscope on just the details, carefully recording them all at the expense of all other normal thought. Because of this, he is not only able to notice relationships and properties of the buildings, but can remember them exactly and use them later in his drawings.

Prank wisely

The Old-School Favorite: Move the Desktop Icons, Take a Screenshot, Set as the Wallpaper

image

Most geeks have done this at some point in their career, because it’s both simple and irritating, especially for somebody who isn’t expecting it. The basic principle works one of a couple of ways:

  1. Take a screenshot of the desktop with the icons where they are, set it as the wallpaper, and then hide the desktop icons.
  2. Move the desktop icons around, or create bogus icons, take a screenshot, and then set it as the wallpaper. This way some icons work, and some don’t.
  3. Take the screenshot of the desktop, and then hide the taskbar below the bottom of the screen before setting the wallpaper (this only works on XP). Even better: flip the image upside down before doing it.

The result looks something like the image above, assuming you followed the second idea and created a folder on the desktop that they’d be sure to notice right away. They’ll keep clicking, but nothing will happen.

Bonus? Combine this with the shutdown shortcut so when they do figure it out and try and open the folder… it’ll give them the shutdown prank too!

Geeky typos

Add Common Typos or Funny Words to MS Word’s Dictionary or AutoComplete

image

There’s any number of possibilities for this one, and the sky is really the limit—the idea is that you put something custom into the AutoCorrect so whatever they type gets replaced with something else.

You can go subtle with it, and just replace a properly typed word with a typo instead, or you can get in their face with something more fun—like making anytime they type their name end up replacing it with “<Name> is a jerk”. Loads of fun.

For Word 2007 or 2010, head to the Office button –> Options –> Proofing –> AutoCorrect Options. For previous versions… I have no idea. If you want this to be system-wide, you can use AutoHotkey instead.

Setup Task Scheduler Jobs to Launch Random Apps (or a Web Page)

image

Even a serious geek is going to be pretty lost on how to troubleshoot a new tab repeatedly opening to a certain page every couple of minutes, if you bury that inside the task scheduler. Just go in and create a new task, run through the wizard and pick the browser executable, plug the site name into the arguments box, and then set the schedule to repeat the task every 5 minutes.

Set the Mouse Pointer to Look Always Busy (to Make Their PC Look Like It’s Hanging)

image

Nice and simple, but oh so fun! Just head into Control Panel –> Mouse –> Pointers and change the Normal pointer to the busy one. They’ll think their computer is hanging all the time, but it’s really not. For extra fun, you could make the mouse pointers gigantic.

Activate High Contrast Mode (with a Single Hotkey!)

image

There’s a built-in accessibility option that can be very confusing to somebody who doesn’t know how to turn it off, and it requires only pressing one shortcut key sequence:

Shift + Alt + Printscreen

That’s it. Once you press that key combo, their desktop will get flipped to the high contrast mode—you can press it again to go back to normal. The great thing is that even if their computer is locked, you can enable high contrast with the icon on the lower left corner. On Mac OS X, you can press Ctrl+Opt+Cmd+8 to invert the screen’s colors.
